Although Benin recorded a positive economic growth, it is still one of the poorest countries in the world (140th out of 188 on the list of countries by GDP in 2013). Main sources of income are port taxes and the revenue from the export of cotton. Approximately 1/3 of the population lives in extreme poverty.
