In 2018, Benin had around 11.4 million inhabitants. In the recent years, the population growth was very strong. The population of Benin is very young, the average age in 2018 is 18,4 years. The age expectancy turns around 58 years for men, 60 for women. The people of Benin consists of several ethnical groups, by which a total of around 60 indigenous languages are spoken. The official language is French. Overall, approximately 1/4 of the population professes to natural religions (mainly Voudoun), 30% are members of Islam, 45% Christian, about half of them Catholics.
